‘It’s every Texan’s right to hold a burger in one hand and a beer in the other.’ Uttered by the owner of one of Houston’s most popular bars, there couldn’t be a more accurate way to sum up pub culture in Houston.
The Historic Downtown Pub Tour will immerse you in the history of this lively Texas city by the best means possible – through its pubs! This Houston night tour will take you to four bars in the historic centre of Houston, giving you a variety of different atmospheres to relax in. Locations can vary each night depending on opening hours, but there are so many great Houston pubs in this neighbourhood that you are thoroughly spoilt for choice!
The tour starts at the bar in Georgia’s Market, a cool spot with a restaurant and grocery store inside. You’ll meet your local guide and get the full scoop on how this building used to be a gambling parlour back in 1895. With a history like that, there are plenty of stories within its walls.
After some introductions, you’ll take a stroll through Market Square Park, a small urban oasis complete with restaurants, sculptures, memorials, and remnants from old Houston buildings and sidewalks. This spot is a hive of activity and full of Houston history, and with your local guide to show you all the points of interest, you’ll never miss a beat.
This park is ringed by bars and pubs inside historic buildings, including an award-winning wine bar inside the Kennedy Bakery Building, a tailor shop that becomes a bar at night, a local hangout with a jukebox featuring tunes from the fifties, a charity bar that believes in the connection between food, drink, and community, plus many more authentic Houston bars. With a selection like that, you’ll never be stuck for choice!
After you’ve sampled a drink in the square, you’ll head for a more elegant bar to try out pinball, or challenge your group to a game of pool. Finally, you’ll perch on cowhide seats and order designer drinks at the bar inside the 1912 Union National Bank Building, the perfect way to finish off a fun-filled evening in Houston.

Mike did an outstanding job on our Pub Tour. He made history come alive...and also had several great ghost stories. We'd recommend this Tour to any other Yankees who're visiting Houston for the first time.

Mike was a great tour guide. I've lived in Houston most of my life and I learned a lot about our city's history. The 4 bars we visited will all receive a second visit if not more from us.
Mr. Dan B.

Mike was an excellent guide who did Houston proud. My husband and I along with the couple we brought with us had a wonderful evening getting to know Houston better. We enjoyed the other 3 couples who were in our group also, Mike was very good at bringing us all together so we became one group instead of 5 couples. I plan on telling everyone I know to go on this tour, it is a great way to spend an evening in Houston.
Ms. Vanessa J.

Mike was an excellent tour guide. He related enough history and gave us enough time for drinks in each of the bars we visited. Now I know what bars to take friends to when they come to Houston to visit. Looking forward to the Ghost Tour.

MIke was a great guide and introduced my bf and I to our new favorite bar and drink in downtown Houston. He was very helpful to any questions we had and managed to keep a group of slightly intoxicated people in line as we navigated downtown. It was very enjoyable! I'm recommending the tour to all my friends :)

I have lived in Houston over 40 years and until this tour I didn't realize how much I didn't know about my city! Michael was a great tour guide and made the history of our town and the Downtown bars, that I never even knew existed, come to life. I loved standing outside the actual places where history took place here many years ago and hearing the stories. We certainly shared lots of laughs on this tour too. I have already recommended this tour to many friends and plan on taking the tour again with my husband. In Fact, Michael mentioned Urban Adventures tours take place around the world and I immediately emailed my husband who was in Vietnam that week and he booked a tour with you that day and enjoyed it just as much as I enjoyed mine. We are now sold-out UA Fans! Thank you Michael and Houston Urban Adventures!

Downtown Houston rocks!
Michael was at his best May 17th! His personality shined with the level of enthusiasm that capped the evening. We were sorry our friends could not join us...their loss...but we made four new friends from Pearland, Katy and Cypress(five, including Michael).
The facts and details were terrific...a memorable evening, and one of the nicest evenings to be on the streets of downtown Houston. It's nice to get an update of its revitalization, especially with Super Bowl LI now on the horizon....
Michael, thank you for sharing your favorite secret place with us...can't wait to return and hope we bump into you on the street!
Mr. Donovan S.

Sandra Lord is a great tour guide, and I look forward to touring the Houston Tunnels and the October Ghost tour. However, you do need to update your description of the tour. We did not start or end at the Lancaster for example. My friends and I have fun no matter what we do, and we still enjoyed this tour. Sandra was super accomodating and we will be back for sure!

This is my second tour with Sandra. She is so good and informative. She makes the tours interesting and fun. She has just the right amount of interaction, joking around, and history in each tour. I tell everyone about these tours. I have been in HOuston for ten years, but now I feel like a true Houstonian after these tours.

Had a fantastic time, can't wait to do it again with more friends! Sandra was GREAT!!
Mr. Don V.
USA ~ 01 Feb 2012[back to top]
The guide was full of information about the pubs and the buildings between the pubs. It was far more interesting than I thought it would be and I learned about a few special pubs in Houston and at the same time lots of Houston history. The guide was very good about road safety.
One problem is the gift certificate seemed to be an unusual form of payment for the guide. You might want to give her more information about the gift certificates you provide.
Mr. Erik B.
USA ~ 25 Jan 2012[back to top]
We had an excellent time! Having lived in Houston for the past 14 years and spent a lot of time in the area we toured, it was great to learn some of the lesser known history. Our guide was a lot of fun and we ended up hanging out in a bar with our group for two hours after the tour was over. This seems like it would be a great way to be introduced to the city whether or not you are from here!
Mrs. Abby L.
USA ~ 24 Jan 2012[back to top]
Sandra is an absolutely wonderful tour guide! She truly knows her Texas & Houston history! She also has great report with the pub owners and staff.
While on the tour my husband and I met some of the neatest, most fun loving people ever. It truly was a wonderful experience that we'll never forget.
Mrs. Julie R.

To the comebacks. Can't wait to tour with her again.

Went on a "Couple Night Out" and had a great time!! The buildings were great, the atmosphere was great and Sandra was great!!
Ms. Jolene F.
USA ~ 21 Nov 2011[back to top]
Sandra was a great tour guide - enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about the subject matter. Our group enjoyed the stories as well as the access to places off the beaten path. However, we were disappointed that half the group had to miss one of the tour stops due to poor time management. Otherwise, everyone was very happy. Thanks!
Mrs. Jacqueline G.
USA ~ 17 Nov 2011[back to top]
I was excited about the tour and it was great! Sandra has great knowledge of the city and its history and her enthusiasm made the tour exciting....even though the one stop at the eclectic department store was a bit hair-raising! It was also great to share our tour with a fun couple and great interaction. Would highly recommend this tour to find out about the "real" Houston :>)

It lasted too long. Dinner needs to not take as long. Otherwise, it was awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed it and know of a couple of friends with whom I would love to do it again. What fun!!

At Urban Adventures, we firmly believe local travel is one of the best ways we can support responsible tourism. In fact, we believe it so strongly that we’ve made it our entire business! As a traveller, we ask that you keep the following in mind:
- People: Be mindful of the local citizens, and seek understanding through shared experiences. Consider their customs and values while in their homeland, and when in doubt, ask your guide for advice.
- Environment: Be mindful of the local environment, and act with conservation and sustainability in mind. Follow local guidelines, as recommended by your guide, and make proactive decisions on your own.
- Culture: When travelling to other cultures, remember that not everyone's customs are the same as yours at home. Be respectful, and be mindful of openly questioning a customary practice, even if you disagree with it. Try to understand from their perspective. You may learn something! Your guide will be an excellent point of reference here, so check with them if you're unsure.
- Economy: Make every effort to use local businesses and put your tourism dollars in the right (local) pocket. We use local vendors and businesses, and your guide will be able to advise you on the best ways to support the local economy.
